How I Became Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor
Most people think a mortgage is just paperwork, numbers, and interest rates.
I learned early on that it can shape — or shake — an entire family’s future.
Before I ever became a loan officer, I saw firsthand what happens when people are given bad advice, rushed decisions, or no explanation at all. Those experiences shaped how I approach lending today — and why, over time, people began calling me Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor. Not because I wanted a title, but because teaching, transparency, and doing right by people always came before selling a loan.
Where My Values Took Shape
I didn’t set out to become “Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor.” It’s not a title someone handed me, and it certainly wasn’t a marketing idea. It emerged from decades of experience, reflection, and a lifelong desire to ensure people are treated fairly when making one of the most important financial decisions of their lives.
My story begins well before my first job. As a kid in the Boy Scouts of America, I learned values that shaped the foundation of who I am today: responsibility, self-reliance, honesty, and service to others. Those lessons stayed with me, even when I didn’t yet realize how deeply they would influence my career.
What Collections Taught Me About Real Consequences
My first real introduction to lending came right out of school, when I took a job in the collections department of what is now — lovingly — known as the “Bank of Arrogance.” Collections is not a place most people choose to stay for long, but it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life.
In that one year, I saw the real impact that loans have on people. The good, the bad, and everything in between. It became clear to me how a few signatures could change a family’s entire future. That early exposure taught me an important truth: people deserve better guidance when making these decisions.
Learning the Mortgage System from the Inside
From collections, I moved into loan processing. This opportunity gave me the behind-the-scenes education that most loan officers never get. It taught me the mechanics of the loan process, including approval and selling to the secondary market. I developed a deep respect for the many moving parts involved in determining whether a loan ultimately helps or harms someone.
Why I Chose Education Over Sales
Eventually, I became a loan officer, and I’ve now been one for more than 25 years. But it didn’t take long in the role to recognize something troubling: many professionals in the real estate and lending worlds were far more interested in making a sale than doing the right thing.
I saw too many people rushed, pressured, or poorly advised. Whether through misaligned incentives, lack of training, or simple apathy, I wanted nothing to do with that approach, so I made a decision early in my career that changed everything.
How “Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor” Was Born
I chose to focus my business on serving the people I cared about most — my friends, their families, and the people they trusted enough to send my way. It gave me the freedom to work the way I believed the job should be done: with transparency, patience, education, and a commitment to making sure people fully understood their options.
Over time, that commitment became my identity. Clients would say, “You care more about teaching than selling.” “You explain things no one else ever has.” “You should teach this stuff!” And slowly but surely, the idea of Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor was born.
What Being a Mortgage Professor Really Means
To me, being a “Mortgage Professor” isn’t a slogan — it’s a responsibility. I approach every client relationship like a partnership — helping you understand how lenders evaluate credit, income, assets, and risk, and providing a fully reviewed pre-approval instead of a quick guess. That responsibility is what being Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor truly means to me.
It also means providing detailed cost itemizations, offering side-by-side comparisons, and encouraging you to shop around. Yes, really — because informed decisions are always the best ones.
What I Commit to as Raleigh’s Mortgage Professor
- I teach you how lenders actually evaluate loan applications, including the 3 C’s of credit.
- When applicable, I provide fully underwritten pre-approvals — not guesses.
- I deliver clear, detailed itemizations of costs for every loan scenario.
- I encourage you to shop around.
- I provide side-by-side comparisons so you can make confident, informed decisions.
After 25 years in this industry, here’s what I know for certain: a mortgage is never “just a loan.” It’s a foundation for your future, your family, and your financial stability. And you deserve someone who treats it with that level of care.
Thank you for trusting me, year after year, to help guide your decisions. It’s an honor to serve you — not just as a loan officer, but as your Mortgage Professor.
